My first sighting of Roja’s new foal was from quite a distance through binoculars. I got only the vaguest impression that there was a little “something” beside her. As I drove closer to a place where I could park and hike, I saw Hollywood’s (and a surprise! no, not a foal), Chrome’s and Grey/Traveler’s bands.
This was my first close-enough-to-photograph view:
Cute! As they always are. 🙂 (This image is heavily cropped, and the heat and air waves were vying for dominance, so there’s some distortion from that, too.)
Then these were from today:
While mama grazed, baby tested those new legs!
Those new legs are pretty strong!
Ze (butt to the camera) following mama and baby brother or sister to water.
Daddy Seven following along.
Ze is standing in the yucky water hole, and daddy Seven is waiting for him to vacate the water, thank you very much.
And so foaling season has started! Luna is officially due, but she’s keeping us waiting a bit!

This year as we are losing so many wild ones off the land these wild babies will be more loved and appreciated than ever. Nice job, Roja! Do you think it is a filly?? mar
Just makes you want to kiss their face doesn’t it. Baby foals are so sweet and cute
I am so jealous!! No babies (that we know of anyway) for us yet. I am glad I can share yours here. Pretty baby, Love those bays!
Great pics of the baby!
Beautiful baby! I can’t stop saying, “Aaaaaawwww!”
Babies are a rite of spring and always a welcome sight. 🙂 I love the bays, too … I think Molly was Roja’s dam, so this baby reminds me of her, even as her daughter Liberty does. This baby is a little more reddish muley bay like Molly, where Liberty is a bit darker. Pretty soon, we’ll have a whole bunch of babies running around Spring Creek Basin.
Sweet! She looks like her big brother :]
How cute!
i don’t really like horse babies but for you to find one in the wild is something entirely different and precious.
i envy you and thank you for sharing the experience.

soo cute! Do you know what it’s name will be?
Rochlia – She does look like her big brother (and yes, I kind of think she’s a filly, but I don’t know for sure yet, so don’t take that as gospel!). She looks a lot like Molly, who I think was her grandma (Roja’s dam).
Nancy – Always!
Iytha – Don’t know how you can’t love foals, but yes, it’s a rare and precious thing! 🙂
Toppyrocks – A friend suggested something … I’ll let ya’ll know. 😉
Wonderful pictures and wisdom!
